Today, Ukraine is legally and actively develops military and penitentiary chaplaincy. The next step is to activate the development of medical chaplains to facilitate the creation of adequate conditions to meet religious needs, spiritual and psychological support to patients and staff health facilities.
As part of the 28 and 29 January 2016 in Kyiv National Taras Shevchenko University held a Ukrainian interdenominational conference “Development of medical chaplaincy in Ukraine: background, needs and prospects.”
This event was attended by ministers of various denominations from different regions of Ukraine, representatives of government, education, medicine and the public. The organizers of the conference were Ukrainian Charitable Foundation “Unity” in cooperation with the Public Council under the Ministry of Health of Ukraine on cooperation with the Ukrainian Council of Churches and Religious Organizations (AUCCRO).
All the speakers unanimously agreed on the urgency and relevance of the introduction of regular medical chaplaincy in Ukraine. Olga Vadimovna Bohomolets shared positive experiences of getting acquainted with the medical services of chaplains in the USA, where it was recently on a business trip, and promised to do everything to facilitate the development and adoption of laws on health official introduction of chaplains in our country. In the meantime, all the chaplains who serve in local hospitals and hospitals operate with the blessing of their Churches purely on a voluntary basis.
The outcome of the conference was the discussion and adoption of resolutions and draft Regulations on the medical and chaplaincy chaplain Health Code. It was decided to create an interfaith working group to develop concepts and strategies for implementing health chaplaincy. It was also decided to address the legislative and executive authorities to establish the appropriate inter-agency working group.
Thus, we can hope that soon we will see in the Ukrainian health care medical staff chaplains who represent different Christian denominations and provide patients and staff highly qualified pastoral care.
